Report Uncovers Over Million Fake Hotel Ads

Operto’s 2026 State of Predatory OTAs report revealed that more than 1.1 million deceptive listings were discovered, targeting searches for well-known hotel brands and affecting roughly 204,000 properties across the globe. The analysis highlighted how these fraudulent entries can mislead travelers, siphon bookings away from legitimate channels, and erode trust in online reservation systems.

The research team pulled data from the Google Ads Transparency Center covering the interval from May 22 to June 21, 2026. By scanning ad inventories during that month-long window, the investigators were able to map the scale of brand-spoofing campaigns that had previously gone largely unnoticed.

On average, each hotel faced 3.9 competing entries that mimicked its official page. For properties located in the United States, the average rose to 6.6 competing ads, illustrating a higher concentration of counterfeit promotions in that market.

Entities behind the spoofing

Almost half of the offending material originated from GuestReservations.com. The remaining share was spread across a cluster of sites such as Room77.com, HotelsOne.com, Reservations.com and ReservationCounter.com, all of which employ similar tactics.

These platforms replicate the look and feel of authentic hotel webpages, diverting reservations and capturing guest information. By doing so, they generate a steady stream of consumer complaints, as travelers discover that their bookings were not secured through the official channels they expected.

Legal and industry response

San Francisco city attorney David Chiu filed a lawsuit against GuestReservations.com and BookOnline.com, alleging deceptive practices and asserting that Booking Holdings supplied inventory for the scheme. The legal action shows the growing concern among municipal authorities about the impact of fraudulent online travel agents on both consumers and legitimate businesses.

Operto chief executive Tim Major warned that artificial intelligence is accelerating the problem, likening the rapid emergence of new shell companies to a “Whac-A-Mole” game. He explained that AI tools enable bad actors to generate convincing copy and launch fresh domains at a pace that outstrips traditional enforcement methods.

Detection initiatives

Operto is building AI-driven investigator agents designed to locate and report infringing sites to Google. These automated agents scan ad inventories, compare page content against verified hotel assets, and flag anomalies for rapid removal.

The Better Business Bureau recorded 232 complaints against GuestReservations.com; 46% cited deceptive cancellation policies, 38% involved guests who believed they booked directly, 34% mentioned hidden fees, and 5% concerned reservations with no hotel record. The complaint data provides a concrete snapshot of the consumer harms linked to the fraudulent operations.
