Celestyal, a trailblazing Greek Islands cruise specialist, is weighing a return to the Arabian Gulf, according to Janet Parton, the company’s marketing chief. Although it’s unlikely both of its ships will base there again, the door remains open for a potential comeback.
Handling Geopolitical Tides
Earlier this year, Celestyal found itself in the global spotlight as one of the few cruise lines with significant capacity based in the Middle East when the U.S.-Iran tensions escalated. The conflict, which began in February, caused a stir in the international community, including the cruise industry. In April, nearly two months into the crisis, Celestyal successfully repositions its ships away from the Middle East to Europe, seizing the opportunity when the Strait of Hormuz briefly reopened.
Celestyal’s strategic maneuver allowed the company to avoid potential disruptions and ensure the safety of its passengers and crew. The decision, however, wasn’t without challenges, including the need to reroute ships, adjust itineraries, and manage passenger expectations. Despite these hurdles, Parton hinted that the line might consider basing a ship in the Arabian Gulf again, starting from 2028, provided the political and security situation stabilizes.
“We’ve had to handle some complex geopolitical waters, but we’re not closing the door on a return to the Arabian Gulf,” Parton said during a media briefing. “We’re carefully evaluating the next two winters’ outlook. We might not return with both ships initially. It could be a case of having one ship in the Mediterranean and one in the Arabian Gulf, should conditions allow us to do so safely.”

Winter 2027/28: New Horizons for Celestyal Journey
Parton unveiled seven new winter 2027/28 sailing options aboard Celestyal Journey, which has a capacity of up to 1,260 guests. The season is slated to commence in December 2027. Originally, Celestyal Journey was scheduled to operate alongside Celestyal Discovery in the Middle East for the following winter. However, the shift in plans opens up new opportunities for the UK market.
“We believe these winter destinations will resonate with the UK market,” Parton said, explaining the strategic shift. “The UK has a strong winter airlift, which should boost its share, even though North America remains our largest source market. We’re confident that these itineraries will allow the UK to secure a larger piece of the pie.”
To further strengthen its presence in the UK market, Celestyal has decided to reinvest in the region. Following a recent consultation on a limited number of UK-based roles, the company is now committed to rebuilding its UK team. Parton shared that Celestyal will be investing in agents through cooperative marketing initiatives and organizing a fam trip with 40 agent spaces, departing from Tarragona in December.
The search for Lee Haslett’s successor is ongoing, Parton confirmed. Recruitment is well underway, but updates on the progress are not yet available. Meanwhile, Haslett’s last day with the company is set for 25 September.
